Study skills for kids

Did you know that study skills do not come naturally? Also, they aren't a BIG part of elementary school. So, how do kids learn how to study?

*****Tip from a teacher, start now. It is never too early to start teaching your child how to study and remember information.*****

Active Listening: Model what this looks like. No phone, no tv. Eye contact with the speaker. Model how to jot down notes while listening. This can be practiced during a story read aloud before bed.

Chunking up work: Teach your child how to focus for 10-15 minutes at a time on one task, then have a break. Set timers.

Organization: HUGE. Teach your child how to keep their bookbag neat. Show them how to organize their binders and papers. Model this behavior with items in your home too. An agenda is a great place to start.

Designate a space: Students need a no distraction place to study and do homework. Go lighting is necessary too.

Create an assessment: Let your child "create a test" on what they have learned. This will serve as a great study guide. You can also give them a test you create!

Study supplies: Use flashcards to study vocabulary words and terms. Use a highlighter or sticky notes to jot notes while reading or listening.

Review: Teach your child to always review their work before being finished.

Read/Recall/Retell: When learning new information: Read it, say it allowed, and then retell it in your own words (3rd grade and up)

Which have you tried or will you try? Let me know!

Pick one to focus on a week and I promise your student will become more confident in studying. This is a life skill that is so important.

Love, Megan Rattray
