TUTORING WITH A TWIST
By the end of 2nd grade, kids should be able to:

Concentrate on tasks for longer periods of time.

Have a bigger vocabulary.

Read aloud fluently and with expression.

Recognize and spell irregularly spelled words, such as because and upon.

Add and subtract 1- and 2-digit numbers up to 100.

Understand the concept of multiplication (for example, that 2 x 3 is two rows of three).

Solve word problems with dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes.

Be able to read nonfiction books with understanding.
-
Read fables and determine the moral of the story.

Divide shapes into halves, thirds, quarters.

Understand place value: ones, tens, hundreds.
-
Add within 20, mentally.
-
Solve 2 step word problems.
-
Write about an event with great detail.
-
Write sentences with correct punctuation.
-
Use adjectives in daily writing (big, wonderful).
