By the end of 2nd grade, kids should be able to:

  • Concentrate on tasks for longer periods of time.

  • Have a bigger vocabulary.

  • Read aloud fluently and with expression.

  • Recognize and spell irregularly spelled words, such as because and upon.

  • Add and subtract 1- and 2-digit numbers up to 100.

  • Understand the concept of multiplication (for example, that 2 x 3 is two rows of three).

  • Solve word problems with dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

  • Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes.

  • Be able to read nonfiction books with understanding.

  • Read fables and determine the moral of the story.

  • Divide shapes into halves, thirds, quarters.

  • Understand place value: ones, tens, hundreds.

  • Add within 20, mentally.

  • Solve 2 step word problems.

  • Write about an event with great detail.

  • Write sentences with correct punctuation.

  • Use adjectives in daily writing (big, wonderful).
