By the end of 1st grade, kids should be able to:

  • Work independently for short periods of time.

  • Have a conversation about what a situation is like from another person’s point of view.

  • Distinguish left from right.

  • Attempt to write and spell new words phonetically.

  • Know sounds for digraphs (ph, th, etc)

  • Read and write common words such as: where and every.

  • Write complete sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation.

  • Read first grade-level (level H/I) books aloud with accuracy and understanding.

  • Tell time to the nearest hour and half-hour using analog and digital.

  • Do addition problems with sums up to 20.

  • Do subtraction problems with numbers 0 to 20.

  • Know major landforms (mountain, volcano, valley).

  • Know the city, state, and country they live in.

  • Write about one topic for 3 pages.

  • Understand ones and tens in a number.

  • Write a story in order.

  • Write an opinion with reasons to support it.

  • Count to 120.

  • Know short/long vowel sounds.
