School is in full swing for most of your kiddos and by now the "newness" of seeing friends and having fun is probably wearing off. The mornings are beginning to be a struggle and homework is a dreadful event.
Have no fear! I have some things you should hear...
First, this is TOTALLY normal. Also, let's all remember these kids have had a CRAZY past 2 years...pandemic, online learning, mask wearing. It takes a toll on little minds and hearts, even if it doesn't seem like it. Here are my top tips for helping your little one staying motivated and adjust this year:
Give them grace. Do you feel like going to work everyday? Do you wake up in a bad mood sometimes? Allow your child to have these "human" moments.
Go to bed 15 mins earlier. A lot of "dysregulation" kids may feel is due to lack of sleep.
Avoid rushing in the morning. It sets the day up stressful.
Do not overbook them with sports and clubs right now. Adjusting to school is enough.
Carve some time out for "quiet time" each day (20 minutes).
Split their homework time up into chunks. Most kids have about a 10-15 minute attention span.
Do homework in a "new" space. Maybe sit on the back deck?
Ask them about their day- favorite part/least favorite, who their friends are, what they look forward to this week.
Use the weekend to unwind (if you can).
Make sure they get outside -daily. Family walks after dinner are great for the whole fam.
Most importantly, remember...this is a HUGE adjustment for all families right now. YOU ARE DOING GREAT and so are your kids.
